Sh*t... Now What?

So here it is: my first actual post for this blog. I’ve been sitting here for… an entire bags worth of goldfish crackers. However long that is. I ate the whole bag. How did I eat an entire bag of goldfish crackers before even writing the first sentence? I literally could not decide what to write about first. That has always been the big issue for me with just everything in my life. “What do I do first?” or “How do I get started?” and even “How do I know which thing is actually the right thing?” And here’s what I’ve concluded: It doesn’t matter.

Let me repeat that so you really understand it: IT. DOES. NOT. MATTER. It doesn’t. I assure you. Because the thing is it doesn’t matter how you get started… as long as you GET started. It doesn’t matter what comes first… as long as after the first thing you continue on to the second and the third and so on. And if it’s the wrong thing first? Well, now you know and you can go back and do it over and do the right thing.

I think we get so hung up on making decisions that sometimes we end up not making them at all. And realistically that is one of the number one reasons we end up not achieving our goals. We give up before we even get started. We stop and turn around when we hit that first uncomfortable hurdle. But I don’t think it’s entirely possible to be 100% successful without at least a little bit of uncomfortableness.

I am an avid book reader. Specifically I spend majority of my reading on self-improvement books or success stories. I don’t just read them though. I take notes. They’re more like study guides to me. Some of them have been uplifting, some inspiring, and some have been just absolute crap. But recently I read “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck” by: Mark Manson (super great read, by the way, I highly recommend this one.) And one of the main points that really stuck out to me was when he said, “Do, or do not. There is no how.”

That one line resonated so deep within me. How could something so simple, have such a grandiose impact? Because it’s so absolutely, fucking accurate. (By the way I curse a lot, so if swearing is super against your moral beliefs this probably won’t be the best blog for you and I sincerely apologize.) But as I was sitting here, snacking on my toddlers crackers, I remembered those Yoda sounding words of advice. And I was quickly reminded that when you’re stuck on a problem, when you don’t know how to get started or what to do, just do SOMETHING anyways.

Sitting there and thinking about it is obviously a smart decision. Rash decisions don’t always make the best decisions. (Just ask 25 year old me about her poor decision to drink alcohol for 8 hours straight the night before her algebra final) But, sitting there and thinking for days on end and not acting on it at all? That accomplishes nothing, friends. Thoughts will not solve your problems, write your papers, fix your relationship, heal your past. Because thoughts will not physically change anything.

Did you hear me? THOUGHTS. WILL. NOT. PHYSICALLY. CHANGE. THINGS. You HAVE to act. So when I recalled the “Do, or do not. There is no how.” I started typing. And low and behold (is that even the correct expression? I don’t actually know) … the “answers” followed. And that’s the point of this incredibly long rant. When you are stuck on a problem or a decision, don’t waste time overthinking it, just start working on it. Do something, anything, and the answers will follow. I assure you. The answers will follow.

P.S. Life is short. Make sure you live a life that you love.
